Partnership in waste management benefits of ecotourism regions

Initiatives for better waste management are growing in major centers and also in municipalities and rural districts, where the society is organized to meet the challenges and take appropriate disposal the waste it generates.

The productive chain of the garbage needs to be designed for partners who promote environmental education, environmental conservation, social and economic inclusion of the pickers of recyclable materials and the articulation with industry recycler.

This is the case of the municipality of Conceição do Mato Dentro, Minas Gerais, known destination of ecotourism, which develops selective collection project in partnership with the municipal government, business group Anglo American mining centre of reference in waste (CMRR) and Recyclable Materials collectors Association (Ascamato).

Conceição do Mato Dentro is part of Intermunicipal public Consortium for the sustainable development of the region of the Middle Ridge, along with the municipalities of Dom Joaquim and Alvorada de Minas. The three came together with the aim to strengthen the actions of waste management, seeking improvements and savings in the acquisition of equipment and services.

Another example of partnership in waste management in ecotourism region is the St George district, in Alto Paraíso de Goiás. With about 800 inhabitants and of a structure of bars, restaurants and inns, the village is located in front of the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park and also faces challenges to give an adequate solid waste disposal.

The video Recycle St. George, produced by Earth and peace project, reports the experience of a local entrepreneur who implemented the operation of separate collection and disposal of recyclable waste in the district. The model of selective collection adopted distinguishes three types of waste: recyclable, organic and rejected. The organic fraction is used in composting plant in the region, which turns the residue and sells as fertilizer for plants. The recyclable waste is sent to Brasília/DF and Formosa, Goiás and the waste goes to the final destination in Alto Paraíso, with significantly lower volume than before deployed separate collection.
